Left the church early this morning and went to the Church Under the Bridge at 7th and I 35 to worship with the homeless community. We talked with some about sports, and they knew more than we did. An older guy who was really into dancing during the worship music, talked with us about how King David danced when he worshiped the Lord. Another guy told us how he joined the military to try to get off drugs. One of Laura's friends who live on the streets struggles with anger management, but he is working to trust God with it and is becoming so joyful. One of the men shared a note of verses with one of our team. Doug took a man to get a bus ticket. And the preacher told how a young boy named Tanner (yes, our Tanner!) came to just help out and serve donuts this morning under the bridge, and he brought a whole mission team with him - all the way from Austin! That would be us!
After church, we went to Festival Beach to enjoy Chipotle for lunch.
Then we spent some time at Frontier Valley Trailer Park playing with a few of the kids who live there, playing basketball, soccer, frisbee, and face painting. It was hot out there in the sun!
After checking into the hotel and a short time of rest, we enjoyed a Chinese buffet meal and then headed over to Twin Lakes Fellowship for worship out on the football bleachers overlooking Cedar Park. Laura shared the story of the Good Samaritan and talked about her experiences mentoring and walking alongside a 6 year old girl and her siblings in East Austin who lost their parents. Laura helped the girl see how she still has a father - our Heavenly Father - who can take our brokeness and make us whole again. This talk helped the students see how this local mission trip can lead to developing relationships with people who are our neighbors but may be hurting and broken. They need someone like us to walk with them, introduce them to Jesus, and teach them how to live in relationship with Him.
We ended our first day with a fun time of line dancing and some two-stepping with Dorothy.
